Bethany has won numerous piano competitions and awards, and is currently a senior at San Ramon Valley High School with an above 4.0 GPA.  Her program will include Ballade No.4 by Chopin; Ondine from Gaspard de la Nuit by Ravel;Mephisto waltz by Liszt.  Admission for this recitalis free. NEW CERTIFICATE OF MERIT CHAIR

We wish to welcome Helen Konowitz as our new Certificate of Merit chair.  Helen has been on our Board as Treasurer and is valued member of our branch.  Please join with me in extending our best wishes and support to Helen as she begins her tenure in this important position.

CERTIFICATE OF MERIT NEWS

A very heart-filled THANK YOU goes to our out-going chair Judy Lichterman.  Judy took this post many years ago having had practically no experience in Certificate of Merit.  She is a natural leader, a terrific organizer and truly wonderful person to work with. We will miss you Judy, but not for long.  Judy has agreed to take over the post of branch historian from our beloved member Barbara Vonk.

Congratulations to our wonderful students and their teachers on a successful Certificate of Merit year.  We had 264 students registered for the exam and 194 successfully passed. Our CM Honors Recital held at 2 locations, JB Piano, San Rafael and United Methodist Church, Mill Valley.  The performances were terrific.

Two students received their Senior Medallions: Betty Cho and Yuekai Sun. Bravo!

Thanks to all the teachers, students and parents who made the event special by helping on the May 25th, the day of CM.  Kuddos to Claire Marchand who always wows the evaluators with her delicious scones. Feedback from the evaluators should make us proud to be part of the Marin Branch of MTAC stated: “Great Food! They do a fantastic job relaxing the kids. Of all the branches I’ve been this year, the Marin Kids have been the friendliest, most outgoing and polite. Many of them said hello, goodbye and thank you. (Not so at other branches.)”

Certificate of Merit success depends on all of us doing our share to make things go smoothly.  Most of you probably know that, due to a family emergency, I was not able to be at CM on March 25th.  Therefore, I must give a special thanks to past CM Chair, Audrey Mahler, and future Chair, Helen Konowitz, who took over my duties. Thanks to their leadership, everything went well and CM was again a great success.  This is my last not to all of you.  It has been quite a ride!

Congratulations and thanks to all!

Judy Lichterman, Chair
Certificate of Merit

Thank you to Judy Lichterman who has taken on the position of Branch Librarian from our esteemed member Barbara Vonk.  The Branch Librarian holds copies of past Certificate of Merit theory exams which you may borrow and make copies (be sure to return them!).  Any members with sight-reading booklets and ear training CD for your Path B students, please return them to Judy not Barbara.  One CD from the 2005 CM program has never been returned.  You may contact Judy at menuet1022@aol.com or by phone (388-1022).

IMPROVISATION IN 2006

The Improvisation Program has been updated to include evaluation of the student’s improvisation performance.  The new Improvisation Evaluation and State Convention Performance Application form is now available on the MTAC website.  Each participant will send in a recording of an original improvisation and will receive written comments on the musicality of the performance in addition to positive feedback on the musical content of the improvisation.  Students participating in this program also have the choice of one or more of three options: 1) recommendations on musical content; 2) application for performance at the State Convention; and/or 2) the Showcase Demonstration Session at the Convention, in which students will demonstrate improvisation for teachers and Convention attendees.  The postmark deadline for application is April 25th.  The completed application, a recording of the improvisation and the $7 fee should be sent to State Improvisation Chair, James Ramos, by April 25th postmark deadline.  James Ramos (klavier@pianists.com)  Dorothy Burgess (doburgess@aol.com).
