HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope you all survived the great rains of this New Year! And for those who suffered damage, I wish you a speedy recovery. If there is anything we can do to help, please contact us.
I will be away most of the month of January. If there are any concerns or urgent business, please contact our past President, Chris Bradley (302-0396) or email MusicaMarin@pacbell.net.
STUDENT BAROQUE FIELD TRIP
On Saturday February 4, 2006 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM our branch will sponsor a field trip to visit the wonderful Baroque keyboard instrument collection of MusicSources in Berkeley. The collections include virginals, harpsichords (single & double Italian, Flemish, French), clavichords, forte pianos, mselaaks, electronic harpsichord and a Klop chamber organ (17th cent. copy). Gilbert Martinez (who has replaced Laurette Goldberg as MusicSources director) will lead a tour with hands-on demonstrations and an “under the hood” look inside the instruments to see how they work. The trip is open all students under age 18. This is an amazing student opportunity to get a first hand understanding of baroque keyboard instruments and try out those baroque pieces. Students do not need to play or have played baroque music to attend. Use this as an opportunity to introduce baroque music to your students! This student workshop is FREE.
We have a very good enrollment for this field trip. We are taking names for a short waiting list (approximately 5 or 10 more). If you have students who are interested, please contact Chris Bradley (302-0396) or email MusicaMarin@pacbell.net who will handle registration for this even in my absence.
CERTIFICATE OF MERIT
Certificate of Merit packets are now at The Magic Flute. This is the packet that contains the evaluation forms and the repertoire, the green work form, and the pink Honors form. These need to be back to The Magic Flute or else mailed or dropped off to me by Feb 10, 2006. Be sure that your student’s syllabus piece is from the level in the syllabus which you have registered for. Also be sure to check in the syllabus when choosing pieces from different musical periods. The main change is that the Impressionist/Early 20th c. composers are now combined with the Romantic composers.
New keyboard sight reading books, produced by MTAC, are now available. Each book contains many short tuneful examples at each level in a variety of styles and keys. These are in the same format as the CM Sight Reading Tests so they make perfect practice guides for CM sight reading preparation.
Book One, Levels Prep 1,2 $7
Book Two, Levels 3,4,5,6 $9
Book Three, Levels 8,9, Adv. $9
Buy all three for $22
There is an automated system in place for ordering these books. When calling the MTAC State Office to place your order (1-800-834-3340), press 1 after you hear the outgoing message. DO NOT DIAL A STAFF MEMBER’S EXTENSION! This automated system has been provided to you so that the State Office Staff can attend to many other pressing matters.
Reminder on repertoire: When a student plays variations, not all need to be played. You can use ones to make the piece an appropriate length. Of course, repeats should never be taken in CM.
