CERTIFICATE OF MERITEvaluation forms must be completed online this year (no paper forms to complete). Access is via your teacher home page, student list - click the arrow to the right of each student's name and highlight "Edit Eval Info". Complete instructions can be found on the CM Forms and Information site, http://www.mtac.org/programs/CMforms You should also have received an email on Sunday 1/6/07 from Helen giving extensive instructions for filling out the online forms. Applying for Branch Honors and/or Convention recitals, as well as making CM day scheduling requests, is to be done on the online Evaluation Form. There will be no more pink and green pieces of paper. Reminder: C/M cannot happen smoothly without everyone's help. All teachers whose students participate in Path A of C/M are REQUIRED to work on the day of C/M or to provide a parent or other adult as a substitute. The number of hours required depends upon the number of students participating: 1 to 5 students - 2 hours 6 to 10 students - 4 hours 11 to 15 students - 6 hours 16 or more students - 8 hours THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE WORK REQUIREMENT! Please email Helen Konowitz by February 9th to let her know the hours you (or your substitute) are available to work as well as the names and phone numbers of parents who will help during their child's evaluation. It is really important to ask some of your parents to help out. The jobs are generally very easy and can be done while they are waiting for their child to complete his/her evaluation. In the event of questions or problems, please follow the line of communication: Parent to Teacher to CM Branch Chair. Parents direct their questions or problems to the teacher; if the teacher cannot answer, please contact Helen Konowitz, Marin Branch C/M Chair. She will refer questions to the appropriate State level person as needed. Helen Konowitz, C/M Chair helenkonow@aol.com - 456-2132
BRANCH HONORS RECITALThis year’s Branch Honors recital is scheduled on March 30th at JB Piano. We will NOT be using the same online registration system that we used last year to enter Branch Honors data. Instead, all data entry will be done through the main MTAC site. All you need to do at this juncture is simply check off that you want your student(s) considered for Branch Honors. DO NOT enter any repertoire. That will be entered after C/M by the C/M chair and will be based on what the evaluators write on March 15th. The evaluators choose the Branch Honors pieces. VIP: This year the evaluators will give each Branch Honors applicant a numeric grade on the white C/M evaluation sheet. The grading runs from 1 minus to 5 plus. The Board has voted that any student who receives a score of 4+ or higher will be eligible to perform in the Branch Honors Recital. Eligibility: All CM levels/school grades Sight-Reading: Average or better Technique: Good or Excellent Repertoire: All pieces must be well performed. The piece selected for Honors Recital must be memorized. Minimum C/M memory requirements must be met (2 pieces memorized). The evaluator will grade the pieces and, in the event a score of 4+ or higher is achieved, the evaluator chooses the piece to be performed. Theory Test: 80% or better Here is a sample evaluation form with the MINIMUM requirements for Branch Honors.
MARGARET BEAN DAVIS MEMORIAL MUSIC COMPETITIONFROM CAROL LARUSSO, Chairman, Margaret B. Davis Memorial Music Competition,steinwaylit@aol.com or 892-8815. This is a reminder about our annual Competition to be held next year on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at the Mt. Tamalpais United Methodist Church in Mill Valley. The updated Forms and Rule shave been posted on our branch web site and are available for downloading and printing. For new members, and those of you who have never entered a student in this Competition, it is a great opportunity for your best students to take part in a valuable musical experience. We hope you will read about the Competition, see what it's all about and feel free call me for further information or if you have any questions. Bear in mind we do require pianists who plan to enter the Competition to play in a Monthly Student Recital prior to the competition. Dates of the various monthly recitals are listed in our annual Calendar and in the monthly Newsletter. Non-keyboard entrants are not required to play in a monthly recital.
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED TO CHAIR BRANCH RECITALSVice President Paul Agricola, who is in charge of finding teachers willing to chair our recital events, has indicated that he still needs volunteers for the 2008 monthly recitals as well as the Branch Honors Recital and Spring Festival. Paul can be reached at 383-2027 or at pagricola@hotmail.com
PROGRAMS! PROGRAMS! ASCAP WANTS YOUR PROGRAMS!Per their agreement with MTAC, ASCAP requires us to send them copies of all our programs so that royalty payments may be extended to the composers and publishers. All you have to do is save a program from your fabulous student recitals, awesome teacher recitals, inspired master classes, brilliant workshops, etc. and mail it to: Marie Carbone
THE TEACHER’S CORNERHelpful hints, tips and teaching tricks from your Marin County colleagues. There is a company called Piano-Pal whose web site features an extensive catalog of most of the major publishers’ works that includes – miracle of miracles! – the actual contents of most of the standard anthologies, i.e. Developing Artist, Keith Snell, Masterpieces with Flair, Recital Winners, Bastien, etc. I find this to be extremely helpful when it comes time to select C/M syllabus repertoire for students, especially if I am using a collection that is not listed in the official MTAC C/M Syllabus. You can check it out at http://www.piano-pal.com/ We’d love to have your teaching ideas for our next Newsletter. Simply send them to Chris Bradley at musicamarin@pacbell.net
UPCOMING EVENTSJanuary 27th He will play Mozart’s B-Flat Sonata, K. 333, and Beethoven’s titanic final Sonata in C Minor, Op. 111. Professor Wellborn has also programmed Chopin’s epic F-Minor Ballade, three Albeniz pieces, and two Liszt works – the dramatic Sonetto Del Petrarca No. 123 and a tuneful concert paraphrase on Verdi’s Opera "Rigoletto". January 29th February 20th
