FAQ

MTAC Marin is the Marin County branch of the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC), a statewide nonprofit professional organization founded in 1897. We are a community of independent piano, voice, string, and music theory teachers who meet MTAC's membership standards, serving families throughout Marin County — including San Rafael, Novato, Mill Valley, Sausalito, Corte Madera, San Anselmo, Larkspur, and Tiburon. Unlike a single studio, MTAC Marin represents dozens of independent teachers, so we're a neutral place to start your search for a music teacher.

MTAC Marin is the Marin County Branch of the Music Teachers’ Association of California®. Our members and programs serve families and music educators throughout Marin County, including San Rafael, Mill Valley, Larkspur, Corte Madera, Greenbrae, Kentfield, Ross, San Anselmo, Fairfax, Novato, Tiburon, Belvedere, and nearby communities.

To qualify for MTAC's Active Membership, a teacher must hold a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in music (or an equivalent), with a concentration in the instrument or subject they teach, and have a minimum of two years of teaching experience, all reviewed and approved by MTAC's State Board of Directors. (Teachers without a music degree can qualify through MTAC's alternative Cal Plan pathway, which involves exams, an audition, and supervised teaching requirements.) This gives parents a way to check a teacher's educational background and experience through an independent, statewide organization.

Use our Find a Marin Teacher directory. You can search by instrument, location, and other preferences to find a member teacher near you in Marin County.

Our members teach piano, organ, harpsichord, violin, viola, cello, string bass, voice, music theory, and composition, for students of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced performers preparing for competitions or conservatory auditions.

We're a branch of independent teachers, not one studio or business. Each MTAC Marin teacher runs their own private practice, sets their own rates and schedule, and teaches in their own style — MTAC Marin simply connects you to teachers who meet MTAC's membership standards and supports students through shared community programs.

Use the Find a Marin Teacher directory to locate teachers who match your needs. Each teacher listing provides a contact form so families can contact the teacher directly.
